Bodbog Reveals the Color Trends for Spring/Summer 2020 Children’s Wear
Every winter, the hottest topic in the children’s fashion industry is: What will be the trending colors for next spring/summer children’s wear? Today, Bodbog Let’s explore the 2020 spring/summer children’s fashion color trends together, so your little one can get a head start on the latest styles.
Soft yellow
The yellow color family continues to drive the growth of children’s apparel; in Spring/Summer 2019, it was one of the fastest-growing colors in UK online retail, with its share of the apparel market doubling year on year from 3% to 6%. Yellow has been incorporated across both boys’ and girls’ collections, and its popularity is expected to persist into 2020. Soft yellow is a key color in the Spring/Summer 2020 children’s fashion trend forecast and represents a fresh hue for today’s retro-inspired themes. Yellow can be used to brighten casual pieces, particularly hoodies featuring slogan prints.
Light purple
Purple made a comeback for Spring/Summer 2019, with purple pieces accounting for a 24% increase in new online children’s wear collections in the UK. The trend is set to continue into Spring/Summer 2020, with related themes already emerging. Soft lilac paired with pastel yellow prints delivers striking results—just look at the designs from industry-leading kids’ brands Molo and Soft Gallery. Keep an eye on combinations of pale lilac with rosewater pink and red, which are among the latest must-haves. Incorporate mineral tones into bohemian and workwear-inspired collections, while using sheer, ethereal lilac in commercial lines to make seasonal graphic tees and tank tops even more eye-catching.
Rose water pink
Pink remains highly appealing in the girls’ apparel market—accounting for 18% of all colored garments in the UK and 19% in the US—and has also seen a rise in new boys’ spring/summer 2019 collections (up 6% year on year in the UK and 24% in the US, representing 2% of total apparel). The classic sweet pink has been largely replaced by rose-water pink, a cleaner, more neutral shade that builds on the cross-gender success of millennial pink—a trend highlighted in our 2020 spring/summer children’s color forecast. Rose-water pink is now making inroads from the youth market into the children’s segment, refreshing both individual pieces for younger kids and streetwear and sportswear for older children.
Tie-dye
Music festival and ’90s themes continue to dominate the children’s apparel market, with tie-dye emerging as a key fashion motif in spring/summer collections and ranking among the top five trending tags. Although tie-dye accounts for only a small share of all prints, it remains worth watching: in the 2019 spring/summer children’s wear launches, the use of tie-dye patterns increased by 31% year over year in the UK and by 10% in the US. Meanwhile, pastel color combinations underscore the growing influence of soft, powdery hues, which are having a significant impact on Instagram content ranging from infant to tween fashion.
Neutral color
Neutral hues are increasingly becoming fashion staples, with the unisex neutral theme continuing to gain momentum and ushering in cleaner, more tailored children’s looks. This trend is equally significant across both boys’ and girls’ collections; data show that brown-themed new arrivals are experiencing year-on-year growth overall (UK +68%, US +13%). More fashionable, refined streetwear is making inroads into the boys’ market, further fueling this shift. Brands are applying this trend to boys’ apparel while testing the waters in the girls’ segment. Consider pairing neutral tones with off-white for a cohesive look. The “Brave New World” aesthetic and “Pure Minimalism” are two key forecast themes that prominently feature neutral color palettes.
